Vosne-Romanée, one of the pearls of the Côte de Nuits

In the heart of the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne, between Dijon and Beaune, Vosne-Romanée always rhymes with exceptional wines. With Flagey-Echézeaux, this commune is at the origin of an appellation which sublimates all the qualities of a single grape variety: pinot noir. Village and Premier Cru appellations allow you to get to know this pearl of the Côte de Nuits.

General presentation of the appellation

Vosne-Romanée AOC wines are produced in the village which gave its name to the appellation as well as in the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux. Between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vougeot, the appellation area is located in the heart of the prestigious Route des Grands Crus, the Champs-Elysées of Burgundy where the most prestigious wines of the vineyard are produced. No less than 6 of the 33 Grands Crus in the region are produced in the two villages of the AOC: Richebourg, la Romanée, la Tâche, la Romanée-Saint-Vivant, la Grande Rue, les Grands Echezeaux, Echezeaux and the prestigious Romanée-Conti.

The AOC Vosne-Romanée is a Village appellation, which includes 14 Climats classified as Premier Cru. Let us quote for example Les Suchots, En Orveaux, Aux Brûlées, Clos de Réas or Les Petits Monts. These Premier Cru appellations can still be followed by the name of the Climat, the parcel of land from which they originate.

In the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée produces only red wines, which give free rein to the expression of pinot noir. This grape variety reigns as the undisputed master on the more than 150 hectares of the AOC.

Characteristics of Vosne-Romanée

The red wines of Vosne-Romanée are distinguished by their richness and balance. Their colour ranges from ruby to black tulip. They offer aromas of ripe fruit dominated by strawberry, blueberry, blackcurrant and raspberry, all expressed on a spicy background. This refined and complex aromatic palette evolves with time towards kirsch, candied fruits, leather and hunting return.

Vosne-Romanees are wines for laying down: 5 to 15 years on average. They are distinguished by a medium tannic mouth, often full-bodied, always velvety.

How to taste a vosne-romanée

Like most fine red wines, an AOC Vosne-Romanée is a perfect accompaniment to red meat. It will sublimate a simple piece of beef cooked with sobriety. This red wine also goes well with slow-cooked white meats, such as 7-hour lamb or navarin. Vosne-Romane also accompanies game birds: squab, thrushes, pheasant, etc., as well as venison: typical dishes such as oeufs meurettes or boeuf bourguignon will also go well with a bottle of Vosne-Romanée wine.

As for cheese, choose products with character and intense flavours such as Epoisses, Saint-Nectaire, Langres, Cîteaux, etc.

For the temperature of service, it is advised to serve a Vosne-Romanée at about 15-16°.

What the RVF says in its 2018 Guide:

Berthaut-Gerbet

"Quatre hectares, onze appellations. À la lecture de ces deux chiffres, on comprend que les cuvées seront limitées en quantité, hélas. Cécile Tremblay, en bio depuis ses débuts en 2003, s'oriente vers la biodynamie et s'affirme chaque année davantage comme une vinificatrice hors pair, intuitive mais ayant beaucoup réfléchi, lu et appris, et surtout comme une dégustatrice redoutable, précise et exigeante.
