Pernand-Vergelesses, in Burgundy: red and white wines of character

This communal appellation in Burgundy is becoming increasingly popular for both its red and white wines, all of which have character. They offer excellent value for money, while benefiting from the aura of the Grands Crus that are produced in this Côte de Beaune vineyard. The appellation pernand-vergelesses Village and Premier Cru thus sublimates an exceptional terroir through two emblematic grape varieties: chardonnay and pinot noir.

General presentation of Pernand-Vergelesses

Pernand-Vergelesses is one of the first villages of the Côte de Beaune. It is located north of the capital of Burgundy wines, between Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix-Serrigny. On the western slope of the Corton mountain, three famous Grands Crus have found a home: Corton, Corton-Charlemagne and Charlemagne.

The AOC pernand-vergelesses is a Village appellation of Burgundy. Eight of its Climats are classified as Premier Cru: Clos Berthet, Sous Frétille, Village de Pernand, Creux de la Net, En Caradeux, Iles de Vergelesses, Vergelesses and Les Fichots.

The vineyard of Pernand-Vergelesses counts nearly 160 hectares. It is divided equally into red and white. The only authorised grape varieties are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Characteristics of Pernand-Vergelesses

The red wines of the Pernand-Vergelesses appellation have a beautiful deep red colour with intense purple hues. The pinot noir grape variety gives this red wine its characteristic berry aromas: strawberry, raspberry, cherry and redcurrant. A touch of violet is added, as well as spicy notes, sometimes even roasted. With time, this aromatic palette evolves towards ripe fruit and is enriched by animal notes, undergrowth, leather and musk. Full-bodied and powerful, this wine is also characterised by solid and firm tannins: they need time to become rounded. The Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru reds are distinguished by their balance, their great finesse and their round and silky tannins.

The white wines of Pernand-Vergelesses have great freshness and a beautiful characteristic minerality. Their colour is pale yellow; it can also recall white gold. The aromas are of white flowers, such as hawthorn and acacia. There are also hints of white fruit, such as apple, and even citrus. With time, notes of honey, spices and amber appear. These white wines, generally lively and dry, are rather firm in their youth. The Premier Cru wines are more complex and concentrated.

As for their ageing potential, a red wine will age for 5 to 10 years, a white wine for 3 to 8 years. The best vintages can wait a few more years in the cellar.

How to taste a pernand-vergelesses

A Pernand-Vergelesses red AOC is ideal with meats of character, such as roast veal, leg of lamb, grilled pork, game birds or even roast beef. Cheeses naturally find their place alongside this red wine: Mont d'Or, Reblochon, Tomme de Savoie, Cîteaux... to name but a few. Serve at a temperature of 15-16°C.

Beautiful fish and sushi are the best allies of white Pernand-Vergelesses. Seafood is also an opportunity to taste this white wine. It also sublimates goat's cheese, Gruyere cheese and blue cheese. Serve this wine preferably between 10 and 12°.

What the RVF says in its 2018 Guide:

Rapet Père et Fils

"Vincent Rapet a succédé à son père pour gérer les 20 hectares de vignoble, principalement situés autour de la colline de Corton. Les murs historiques du chai accueillent depuis quelques années une cuverie moderniste qui, associée à une série d'investissements dans le renouvellement du matériel de culture, offrent désormais à Vincent un outil de production qui permet de bousculer les meilleurs de la Bourgogne.
