Clos de Rougemont - Abbaye de Marmoutier - Vouvray Sec

At the beginning of the second millennium, Marmoutier had become one of the largest abbeys in Western Europe. Many famous Christians (popes and kings) came to visit theto visit the abbey and its venerable vineyard planted by St Martin, surrounded by a flourishing vineyard on the slopes of the Loire, from Tours to the Vouvrillonnes valleys.

The revolution of 1789 dealt a fatal blow to Marmoutier Abbey, which was falling into disrepair with the Enlightenment and the new ideas. The phylloxera attack at the end of the 19th century sealed the history of San Marino's vineyards, which fell into oblivion.

The site of the Marmoutier Abbey had been abandoned for almost two centuries. The Comité interprofessionnel des Vins de Touraine and the city of Tours (owner of the site) had the intention of reviving this historic place.

Our estate applied for and was granted a 50-year long lease on the Clos de Rougemont. It was in 1995 that the replanting of the Clos was undertaken by our estate. The desire to produce exceptional wines on this historic site required us to plant around 1600 free-standing (ungrafted) vines and 10,000 grafted vines selected from our best terroirs.
