The history of the Ridge vineyard dates back to 1885 when Osea Perrone, a practicing physician, purchased 70 hectares near the summit of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains at an altitude of 850 metres and planted terraced vines. In 1940, the vineyard, then abandoned, was bought by William Short, a theologian who planted several plots of Cabernet Sauvignon. However, it was not until 1959 that the first vintage of Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon was produced under the control of Dave Bennion and his three associates, all researchers at the University of Standford. In 1967, Ridge Vineyards became a private company with a production of 3000 cases per year. In 1989, Paul Draper, a philosophy graduate from the University of Standford, joined the Company on his return from Chile, where he had left to run the establishment of a winery. Paul Draper is not an oenologist and has a very pragmatic approach that compliments very well the philosophy of the field based on the notion of know-how acquired over the years. Paul Draper's philosophy is simple, find the grapes with the greatest aromatic intensity and extract these aromas in the most natural way possible. He thus managed to lead the Ridge estate to the pinnacle of Californian viticulture and was promoted to Man of the Year 2000 by the Decanter. All the wines on the estate fermented with natural yeasts, the reds in small vats to increase the intensity of the extractions and the Unsplected Chardonnay in French oak barrels (65%) American (35%) naturally dried. Zinfandel winemaking is carried out with the submerged hat while the other grape varieties are made by gently pumping the grape juice over the hat at regular intervals. The thirty plots that make up the Monte Bello vineyard are fermented separately and raised for 85%in American oak barrels and 15%in French oak barrels. The blending is done after malolactic fermentations and is based on the blind tasting of the different vintages. All important decisions (harvest, pressing, sub-drawings, traffic jams) are based on sensory analyses, with laboratory analyses only being used to confirm sensory decisions. The best Cabernet Sauvignon wines are selected for the estate's flagship wine, Ridge Monte Bello, the others are assembled for the Ridge Santa Cruz.
Its grape variety: Zinfandel
There had long been a mystery about the origin of Zinfandel. It is only recently that it has been proven that its DNA structure is exactly the same as Primitivo, an Italian native grape variety from Puglia. It is also said to be related to The Plavac Mali of Croatia.
However, it is not yet known how this orphan variety has come to its adopted country, California, where it becomes an emblematic and privileged grape variety for many winemakers. Upon its introduction in California around 1850 the Zinfandel was assembled with the Mission, a very productive variety of dubious quality, to bring structure and color. Unnoticed at the beginning of his career, his popularity increased as winemakers realized his quality as an improving element in an assembly. We also begin to appreciate wines derived exclusively from Zinfandel, we attribute a certain temperament: a velvety mouth, a fruity, rich and frank side with spicy notes, especially black pepper. A true chameleon, it is capable of taking on different forms: from small wine for mass consumption to the great powerful and silky wines found among the best producers, through light and fruity rosés, called 'White' or 'Blush' Zinfandel.
Sensitive to soil and climate, this grape is not the easiest to grow. Uneven phenolic ripeness of the berries, sensitivity to disease and frost, and moreover if the grapes are too ripe they may lack acidity. Many producers see Zinfandel as a challenge, which they often succeed in.
