"Génépi" is a generic term given by the inhabitants of the region to several aromatic plants (sagebrush) of the Alps. For mountaineers, the tradition is to harvest these plants in August and macerate them in alcohol.
The Carthusians, who have distilled plants for more than 400 years, have their own secret recipe for Génépi, including several macerations and distillations. This particular process allows alpine plants to deliver all of their aromas.
All these liquors based on the recipe of a grimoire of the 16th or 17th century have been developed by the Carthusian fathers; their marketing helps their community to survive and continue to pray in silence and solitude, according to the inspiration of Saint Bruno.
