Details

A wine of very high guard!

The Rangen vineyard, at Domaine Zind-Humbrech,enjoys extreme but interesting wine growing conditions: high altitude, late climate, strong south-facing slope, acidic and aggressive soil, composed of sedimentary volcanic rock, creating very harsh working conditions.

This vineyard with vines of forty years also has the ability to concentrate the grapes late in the season, when the summer heat has passed. September or even October days can seem as hot as a beautiful summer day.

As in many other terroirs in 20, the Pinot-Gris Rangen was able to develop a pretty noble rot

The combined effect of the Thur River, bringing moisture and reverberation of the sun, and the very drying dark volcanic soil may explain such a noble rot on a grape with skin as fragile as Pinot-Gris,

The nose has a personality very similar to that of the Riesling in 20 .

Without the contribution of noble rot (wax, encaustic, honey) that distinguishes this wine from Riesling, the aromas of gun stone, smoke, iodine,or even almost peaty are very close to those of Riesling in this vintage.

The nose is still closed and does not suggest the richness in the mouth.

The palate is dense, long and very mineral, without heaviness, always thanks to this elegance specific to the vintage. The end of the mouth is soft but the minerality and structure will certainly evolve this wine towards a dry feeling over time.

More details:

Bottled 9/20; Acquired alcohol: .6; Residual sugars: 49 g/l; 4.8 g/l H2SO4, pH: 3.6; Yield: 17 hl/ha; Tasting Optimum: 2015-2040; Average age of vines: 41 years; Terroir: Volcanic (tufs and grauwackes), south exposed, very steep slope. Index 5 (domain)

As in many other terroirs in 20, the Pinot-Gris Rangen was able to develop a pretty noble rot while the Riesling had remained much healthier. The Rangen enjoys a late climate that is counterbalanced by a very solar exposure, which often allows this terroir to catch up and exceed many terroirs earlier. The combined effect of the Thur River, bringing moisture and reverberation of the sun, and the very drying dark volcanic soil may explain such a noble rot on a grape with skin as fragile as Pinot-Gris, especially on the lower part near the river. The drip was more important on this grape because the flowering took place earlier. The fermentation was fast enough (three months) to finish on a soft balance, normal for a wine with such richness.

3/20: the nose has a personality very close to that of the Riesling in 20 . Without the contribution of noble rot (wax, encaustic, honey) that distinguishes this wine from Riesling, the aromas of gun stone, smoke, iodine, or even almost peaty are very close to those of Riesling in this vintage. The nose is still closed and does not suggest the richness in the mouth. The palate is dense, long and very mineral, without heaviness, always thanks to this elegance specific to the vintage. The end of the mouth is soft but the minerality and structure will certainly evolve this wine towards a dry feeling over time. Wine of great guard.
