Details

A wine of very large guard!

The Rangen vineyard, the Domain wiki-Humbrecht enjoys extreme but interesting wine growing conditions: high altitude, climate late, steep exposed South, acid soil and aggressive, composed of sedimentary volcanic rock, creating conditions of work very hard.

This vineyard in the vineyards of 40 years also has the ability to focus the grapes late in the season, when the summer heat are placed. Days of September, and even October, may seem as warm as a summer day.

As in many other terroirs in 20, Pinot-Gris Rangen was able to develop a pretty noble rot

The combined effect of the river Thur, providing moisture and the reflection of the Sun, and the dark volcanic soil very drying can explain such a presence of noble rot on a grape in the skin as fragile as the Pinot Gris.

The nose has a very similar personality from the Riesling in 20.

Without the contribution of noble rot (wax, Encaustic, honey) that distinguishes this Riesling wine, aromas of flinty, smoke, iodine, or even almost peaty are very close to those of Riesling in this vintage.

The nose is still closed and does not guess the richness in the mouth.

The Palace is dense, long and very mineral, without heaviness, always thanks to this clean vintage elegance. The finish is soft but the minerality and structure will certainly evolve this wine into a feeling of dry over time.

More details:

Bottling 9/20; Acquired alcohol:. 6 °. Residual sugar: 49 g/l; 4.8 g/l H2SO4, pH: 3.6; Performance: 17 hl/ha; Best drunk: 2015 - 2040 ; Average age of the vines: 41; Terroir: Volcanic (tuffs & grauwackes), facing South, very steep. Index 5 (field)

As in many other terroirs in 20, Pinot-Gris Rangen was able to develop a pretty noble rot while Riesling remained much more healthy. The Rangen enjoys a late climate which is however balanced by very solar exposure, often allowing this soil to catch up and exceed many more early terroirs. The combined effect of the river Thur, providing moisture and the reflection of the Sun, and the dark volcanic soil very drying can explain such a presence of noble rot on a grape in the skin as fragile as the Pinot Gris, especially on the close the lower part of the river. Coulure was more important on this grape because the flowering took place earlier. The fermentation was fast enough (three months) to complete on a soft, normal balance for a wine with such riches.

3/20: the nose has a very similar personality from the Riesling in 20. Without the contribution of noble rot (wax, Encaustic, honey) that distinguishes this wine of Riesling, the flinty, smoke, iodine, or even almost peaty aromas are very close to those of Riesling in this vintage. The nose is still closed and does not guess the richness in the mouth. The Palace is long, dense, very mineral, without heaviness, always thanks to this clean vintage elegance. The finish is soft but the minerality and structure will certainly evolve this wine into a feeling of dry over time. Wine to keep.
