Details

This cuvée is aged for months in barrels. There are aromas of ripe red fruits, cherry and blackberry, with a few hints of chocolate and spices.  The wine is round in the mouth with sweet tannins and a beautiful finish.

The region

At the foot of the eternal snow-covered peaks of the Andes is Argentina's largest vineyard (145,000 hectares or 70%of Argentina's vineyards). Being recognized as the best wine region in Argentina, most of the major wineries are located there. This region brings together a total of 21 domains that produce millions of hectolitres per year. No wonder, then, that Mendoza is really the epicentre of Argentina's wine industry.

The domain

The Bodega Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 following the immigration of the Catena family, of Italian origin, to the Lujan de Cuyo region a few kilometers from Mendoza.
This province is considered to be the most suitable for growing vines. Nicolas Catena owns several vineyards planted aloft in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.
We can distinguish the vineyard of "Tikal" planted at 950 m altitude of 5 hectares, the vineyard "of Angelica" planted at 860 m altitude of 79 hectares and the vineyard of "Luca" planted at 30 m altitude of 35 hectares. It was under the leadership of the younger brother, Jorge Catena, a graduate of Davis Wine University in California, and under the tutelage of Nicolas Catena, that the vineyards and winemaking techniques were modernized. Drawing on his Experience in California, he set up a research program to locate the best microclimates and terroirs to plant French, Italian and Californian grape varieties. Winemaking has been run by José Galante since 1975. José's experience goes back to the Simi estate in California as well as a long stay in the Bordeaux region, Burgundy and Chablis. The director of viticulture is Pedro Marchevsky since 1972. The estate markets its wines under three labels: Catena Alta, Catena and Alamos.

The Malbec grape variety

Black grape, which was very popular in Bordeaux, it is still associated with the vineyards of Cahors and Argentina. This grape variety, which adapts well in many regions, is known by various names; studies show a long list of almost 400 synonyms; the best known are the Côt in the Loire Valley, Pressac in Libournais or Auxerrois in Cahors.
In Argentina, it is the most planted grape variety on an area of more than 16,000 hectares. Often vinified in single-grape, the Malbeck, to use local spelling, shows many organoleptic similarities with wines from Bordeaux blends. It has clearly become the favourite grape of the Argentinian vineyard and seems to have found its favorite place in the Mendoza region where it is able to reach heights of quality and elegance. Very dark in colour, the wines are intense and fruity, with a good ability to age.
