Toiteach A Dhà
For peat lovers!
With the launch of the new Bunnahabhain called "Toiteach" (pronounced "Totch Tchach"), the Islay distillery has launched a real revolution in relation to its history. The name, which means "smoked" in Gaelic, is in itself quite a programme. The most northern distillery of the island has always been distinguished from its colleagues by the absence of peat and smoky notes in its malts, operating in a powerful and often maritime malty register, always remarkably aromatic.
Nose:
Toiteach is a powerful malt, where the peat makes its vegetal notes felt from the first nose, but with elegance and without dominating the other aromas.
Palate:
On the palate, the attack is warm, well marked by the peat, but also accompanied by fruity sherry notes and a peppery character.
Finish:
The finish is voluptuous, with a nice peaty length and a long persistence.
Source: Islay
The most westerly of the Scottish islands (apart from the Hebrides) is hardly attractive, with its stony hills no higher than 500m and wind-battered peaty plains. Islay is nevertheless a true paradise for enthusiasts, as it is home to some of Scotland's most distinctive malts. The island has many assets that explain the vitality of its whisky production. Indeed, its fertile land has long enabled it to produce the barley it needs; water is abundant thanks to high rainfall; and the peat bogs, which provided the fuel, represent almost a quarter of the island's surface area.
